I'm pretty sure that most of us have seen the controversial skit aired in the September 26 episode of "Harry and Paul" which showed comedian Harry Enfield telling a postman that he is ordering his Filipino maid to mate with his friend Paul Whitehouse. The racist portrayal of a Filipino domestic worker by British Broadcasting Corp is not the first in history. The skit was done in bad taste, and it contributes further in creating more negative stereotype impression for the whole world, which is degrading and so not fair especially for "us" Filipinos working abroad also referred to as "bagong bayani". Is this how the world see Filipinos?
We have the right to feel angry, we should demand an apology from BBC, every Filipino has his or her own opinion about the issue, even politicians and social civic group in the Philippines have expressed their opinion, but none of these people ever think of the reason why Filipinos are perceived this way.
Reality check, and being an observant person that I am, I witnessed some of the “irregularities” here in Singapore. With due respect to those who really work decently here for their family. Prostitution is legal in Singapore, and along with Chinese from mainland china and thais, Filipinos are known to be one of hottest prostitutes here in Singapore. Some of them work as DH and during offs they will do monkey business. I won’t blame them for they have their own reason but something needs to be done. The plight of millions of Filipinos working overseas should be given full attention by the administration. If the government will not act on this we will never regain the respect we Filipinos truly deserve.
